I still need to see The Wrestler.

I need to see it in english... A drama can easily turn out in a comedy when the word are said 2 seconds before or after the mouth move and when the voice really don't fit with the man's face...

I just watched Rachel Getting Married and thought some of parts lingered too long and was a bit excessive but overall a very good film. I thought Hathaway was deserving of the Oscar she was completely believable as recovering drug addict her performance was brave and powerful. Winslet's win was also deserving but I believe it was the holocost film combined with the past snubs that pushed her ahead.

Yeah, I read that a while ago, not really sure how I feel about it. All it will do is just be able to nominate five more films that never had a chance to win, but are mainly put in to please those are upset their favorite film was not nominated. My guess if this were done last year, it probably would have opened spots for The Wrestler, Revolutionary Road, Doubt, Dark Knight, and Wall-E. Though, I would have preferred a few those over some of the actually nominees, especially in The Wrestler

Consider the marketing opportunities as well, five more films a year will be advertised as Best Picture Nominee, which is supposed to boost home video sales by blah blah percentage. Very clever indeed.

I think it's a dumb idea. They to want to go back to the golden age of Hollywood, forgetting the fact that Hollywood films were just plain better back then. Like, one example they use is 1939 (when Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Wuthering Heights, Love Affair, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Of Mice and Men, Dark Victory and Ninotchka were all nominated) as if we'll ever see that many high caliber films come from Hollywood within the same year ever again. I highly doubt they'll be able to find 10 worthy films to fill the slots, although I like the idea of foreign films, animated films, and documentaries being honored beside the predictable prestige pictures.

I'm curious if Let the Right One In is eligible this year, since apparently it wasn't in 2008? It'd be great if that got a Best Picture nomination and I guess now there's more of a chance.

I highly doubt they'll be able to find 10 worthy films to fill the slots, although I like the idea of foreign films, animated films, and documentaries being honored beside the predictable prestige pictures.

Quite agree, when you look at the previous few years Best Picture Winners, Crash, Titanic, Chicago et cetera, it's not that there were too few nominees, it's just that the films themselves were below par.

I'm curious if Let the Right One In is eligible this year, since apparently it wasn't in 2008? It'd be great if that got a Best Picture nomination and I guess now there's more of a chance.

Why was it not eligible? It had a limited release in October 2008 so I'm pretty sure it will not be eligible this year.

Quite agree, when you look at the previous few years Best Picture Winners, Crash, Titanic, Chicago et cetera, it's not that there were too few nominees, it's just that the films themselves were below par.

I'm still curious on how the 10 nominations will go. It does smell of bit of desperation though. Every year does have enough films that are good to great -- they just do not always pick them. Two of those three you mentioned I'm not the biggest fan of (I'm still dreading on watching Crash -- is the directors cut better than the first release of which I own?)

I haven't actually seen Crash (I know it's awful to slag a film you haven't seen), for the same reason as I haven't seen A Beautiful Mind, they both just sound awful. I'd rather spend those hours watching something worthwhile.

Why was it not eligible? It had a limited release in October 2008 so I'm pretty sure it will not be eligible this year.

I'm not sure. It's only something I've heard. The Oscars have all kinds of weird guidelines. Did it have a "qualifying" run in New York or LA? Because that's how a film gets nominated in a given year, I think.

Actually looking on their site (I'm not creating an account) the documentary and short film subjects have the same rules:

To be eligible for 82nd Academy Awards consideration, a documentary feature must complete both a seven-day commercial run in a theater in Los Angeles County, and a seven-day commercial run in a theater in the Borough of Manhattan during the eligibility period.
The eligibility period begins on September 1, 2008, and ends on August 31, 2009. An extension of the eligibility period to September 30, 2009,

So it looks like you are correct (though specifically a specific area of New York) on the qualifying run.

From the Academy website:

Official Screen Credits Form

Eligibility for the awards competition is contingent on the receipt of an Official Screen Credits Form with full, complete and authentic credits, the name of the Los Angeles County theater where the film has played, and the dates of the Los Angeles run. Submit credits online using the Official Screen Credits Form.

I don't think Let the Right One In was eligible for the Foreign Film award because its country picked another movie for the official submission. It should have been eligible in other categories.

Many good films have been snubbed at the Oscars. What do you think are the worst?

For Best Picture, Best Documentary, Best Short Subject, and Best Foreign Language film, let's focus mostly on ones never nominated.

It did get nominated, but Saving Private Ryan really got cheated out of the Best Picture award. Shakespeare in Love was good, but come on!

This is kind of a big deal. FF Coppola will get the Thalberg award and honorary Oscars will also be given to Kevin Brownlow, Jean-Luc Godard, and the immortal (really, I think he is immortal) Eli Wallach.

Well, the awards were announced today and, at the risk of being throttled, can I say that for once I'm not completely appalled by the blandness of the nominated films? I haven't seen all of them, obviously, but I have legitimate interest in every single one of the Best Pic nominees.

It's nice to see the Academy taking advantage of the dubious 10 Best Picture nominees format by acknowledging smaller films. Winter's Bone and Black Swan have no real chance of winning, but at least they were given a shot. I'm also surprised and delighted that John Hawkes and Jacki Weaver got acting nods.
