LIFE IS SWEET
Mike Leigh

United Kingdom • 1990 • 103 minutes • Color • 1.85:1 • English
This moving film from Mike Leigh is an intimate, invigorating, and amusing portrait of a working-class family in a suburb just north of London—an irrepressible mum and dad (Alison Steadman and Jim Broadbent) and their night-and-day twins, a bookish good girl and a sneering layabout (Claire Skinner and Jane Horrocks). In it, Leigh and his typically brilliant cast create, with extraordinary sensitivity and craft, a vivid, lived-in story of ordinary existence, in which even modest dreams (such as the father's desire to open a food truck) carry enormous weight. Perched on the line between humor and melancholy, Life Is Sweet is captivating, and it was Leigh's first international sensation.

This is today's most exciting announcement, for me. The OOP DVD has become prohibitively expensive, so I've never seen the film, and I've been delving more and more into Leigh's sad, beautiful world.

One of Leigh's best. Looking forward to seeing just what the extras on this are. Not the greatest sleeve artwork, but it feels like Criterion are going through a fallow period artwork wise anyway.

It's not that it isn't a pleasent enough image, it's just that the caravan only has relevance to a secondary character in the film and nothing really to do with the overall story. So in that way it's a redundant sleeve.

I still haven't watched my copy of Naked, and I've seen nothing else from Leigh. Who would he compare to?

That's something you need to work on Duke. Mike Leigh is hard to compare to anyone since he has his own way of working, he sketches characters and gets actors in to improvise around scenarios he has come up with. From there he goes away and hammers together a 'script'. If you had too, I'd say he's in the same category as Ken Loach and Alan Clarke, since like both of those masters he spent his early years shooting television drama and his work is dripping in politics.

However unlike those Leigh brings a slightly less realistic view of the world to his work. I always think of it as a middle class perspective of the working classes. That’s not to take anything away from his films (he’s easily one of the first directors that comes to mind when I’m asked the yawnable question about favourite direc... Zzz), it just means that his films aren’t quite as harsh as either Loach or Clarke.

Do check him out Duke, Life Is Sweet is a perfect starting point too. It’s very funny and contains all the major Leigh players from this period. Naked is his masterpiece but this is a far easier entry point.

Topsy Turvy atypical though it may be, is my favorite.

I agree on Topsy Turvy. It's the only Leigh I've seen so far but I look forward to this one as well.

Lawrence - my interest in the covers is purely aesthetic. I don't know the film but I like the looks of this cover and it compels me to want to see the film, therefore in my calculus it's a success, whereas the new Richard III.... not so much.

It's up there for me too Izo. But like you say it's not a typical slice of Leigh, but then again with his new film being about one of the greatest ever English painters (Joseph Turner) it might become something he does more and more. I hope so, since it feels like far more of a challenge for him to do a period piece about real people.

Just finished it. Nice film. I really enjoyed this, and I think the artwork fits, as it's a bit about people's dreams and the caravan represents Andy's dream.

I had my first experience with Life is Sweet yesterday, and I feel like it does easily sit among Mike Leigh's best work. As always, the acting is top notch, and Leigh's sometime-tendency to make his characters a bit too over-the-top is kept mostly in check here with the notable exception of Timothy Spall's Aubrey and his hilarious attempt at opening a French restaurant ("tres exclusive"), whose drunken grand opening is one of the film's comedic highlights. The film's standouts for me are Leigh regulars Alison Steadman and Jim Broadbent as the mother and father to polar-opposite twin girls, one of whom has a serious eating disorder, the seriousness of which is gradually and heartbreakingly revealed throughout the course of the film.
