So... the Academy Awards... I have seen NONE of the films, except for a couple in Best Visual Effects - The Avengers, and Prometheus.

Well, other than Best Animated Feature, of course. I've seen and thoroughly enjoyed 4 out of 5 of those, and I really REALLY want to see the 5th.
Brave - own
Frankenweenie - want to see (I like the original short)
Paranorman - own
The Pirates! Band of Misfits - own
Wreck-it Ralph - saw in theaters, want to own

My priorities are mixed up... But who cares?

It is a bit of a shock that I haven't seen one single film from any of the nomination categories. So, Argo eh? Does the win bother or excite anyone?

Neither, really. I'd have liked to see Django Unchained take it, as it was my favorite film that I saw last year, but Argo was good. Not great, in my eyes, but a solid thriller.

I seem to be one of the few that usually keeps up with most movies from each year as the year goes. I saw just about every main nominee outside of Les Miserables and a few random others.

Argo winning was nice to see. Very happy it wasn't Lincoln and it was nice payback for not even nominating Affleck for Best Director.

Ang Lee winning as Best Director was also very nice to see. I thought he was a long shot, but from the list of nominees, I thought he was the most deserving.

I thought Lincoln was very good, but also very Oscar bait-y and stuffy. Tommy Lee Jones was the highlight for me.

Les Miserables was just plain awful. Les Close-Up. However, the single-shot, single-take "I Dreamed a Dream" that won Anne Hathaway the Oscar was pretty great, and pretty powerful.

I didn't think Lincoln was bad I guess I should clarify, just very by the book and nothing I guess outstanding outside of the par for the course stellar performance by Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones. I actually hated Sally Field in it. Good movie overall, but wouldn't be among what I thought were the best of the year.

Oh come on Argo was a decent enough film that derailed itself with a tacky 'exciting' ending that made it at best another Hollywood flick. For it to be the best film of the year it would need to be flawless, and it was far from that. The scene where John Goodman has to answer the phone and can't because he needs to walk through an active film set, and there's Ben and the gang at the airport with their cover about to be blown. Come on, what a crock. What would Alan J. Pakula have said? Laughable. Still let the Oscars crowd vote for whatever the hell they want, all it means is some people can think of themselves as THE BEST, but what it's really about is poster quotes, biggest cock in town style swagger and of course money.

When we look back in 15 years time at 2012 I don't think Argo is the film we'll be thinking of.

That scene is just a nice bit of suspense. No different than the car that won't start in Double Indemnity or countless scenarios in Hitchcock films. It's a Hollywood film, and it never claims to be any different. Trying to take it any other way does the film and viewer a disservice.

I hesitate even to defend it, though, since I found it mostly underwhelming.

Except of course the films you mention aren't "based on a true story". I think that's what makes it so much worse.

Yeah, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest. Who really believes that that's how it all went down? I mean, Fargo is "Based on a True Story" too.

Fargo is based on a true story in a tongue in cheek way. Plus it feels wrong to compare Argo to a Hitchcock film, i just can't see the comparison myself, other than they are films. You can say it doesn't bother you and that's all well and good, but when you start taking the kind of liberties that Argo does then you end up with a shoddy film.

It does bother me, it bothers me that the Canadians role in the film was downplayed too, so it's the usual Stars and Stripes to the rescue thang.

I liked Brave, but I thought it was not as well done as The Pirates! and Wreck It Ralph. Was it the Pixar name that helped it win? I knew The Pirates! was not going to win but along with Kristin Thompson thought it was the best annimated film of the year.

I thought Argo was going to win (not my favorite, but it was the odds favorite so it should not have surprised anybody). The question is "should a film be as truthful as possible if dealing with a true story?"

I still have several films to see out of many of the winners and nominees, mainly because they are not yet on BD/DVD and I missed them in the theater like Lincoln, Django Unchained, Les Miserables. It would be nice if 2012 releases didn't take until March or April to be released.

It also seems that the Academy has a short attention span and does not really think about the first several months of the year :D. I know this has been pointed out before and, of course, many films that are considered Oscar worthy are waiting until December to be released.
Under Construction:

I liked Brave too, but I think I went into it with lower expectations after it was mauled so much on release. I was really hoping Pirates would win, since not only was it an engaging film but it really made me laugh and I love Aardman to boot. I can't wait to see Wreck It Ralph, although I know all the game references will soar over my head.

I liked Brave more the second time I watched it (though I gave it ***/**** the first time I saw it). I did not have the expectations that the trailer sent forth (I really thought that was a misleading trailer) on a repeat viewing (the movie looks great in the theater). Of course I try to avoid trailers when I can :D (I like the stories of Gene Siskel waiting outside of the theater until the trailers were over).

But, I just really liked The Pirates! more because of its offbeat humor, the way it looked, the great Hugh Grant voice and infused dry humor and the detail throughout. IT is one of those films the more I think about the more I like it. I thought this would be a non-Pixar year because of Wreck It Ralph though. I knew Frankenweinee did not have a chance though I still need to see it (the only one of the four I have not seen). My biggest issue with Paranorman was the body dysmorphia. I was hoping Hotel Transylvania would have been nominated.

Though I have not seen Lincoln, Daniel Day-Lewis was the heavy favorite. I recently saw Washington in Flight and really liked his performance. Looking forward to The Master coming out this week here on BD/DVD.

I haven't seen Lincoln yet either, but I've thought for years now that Daniel Day-Lewis is by far and away the best actor out there. So I've no doubt that he'll be great as Abe. The first thing I ever noticed him in was My Left Foot and I just thought he was disabled.

While I'm not a big fan of the overall movie, Daniel Day-Lewis performance was great. Not as showy as Daniel Plainview, but he still fully encompasses the role of Lincoln. It was a deserved award though Phoenix in The Master could have given him a run for it.
