This is a really sweet and charming little film. Greta Gerwig is so lovable, even when her character is being an idiot, that her performance alone is good enough reason to see the movie, but when you toss in the lovely B&W photography of NY (does any other city look more romantic in grayscale? I think not) and the excellent script and the supporting cast...this is one of the best indie films of the year so far. The last scene (where it is revealed how she got the name Frances Ha) is one of the darn cutest moments in any movie this year, too.

I feel late to the party but I finally saw this tonight. It was good, I thought, as a fan of Baumbach's work. It seems to start off as more typical than it becomes. It defied my expectations a little, and I liked that. Gerwig was indeed charming in her own way. She's a fairly unique presence on film. I only hope she shows more versatility than what I've seen from her thus far. Still, nothing necessarily turned me off and I felt so incredibly cautious of hipsterism. 

 

I do think that the path Frances takes here is ultimately what sets things apart. She's not totally likable. She screws up. Her late success almost feels forced. Another actress could have easily lost the audience but Gerwig indeed has a gift for coming across as unassuming and unnatural and hard to dislike.

Well if Clyde was late to the party then I've arrived just as everyone else is leaving. Watched this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. I've liked pretty much everything Baumbach has had a hand in, but for some reason, well actually people actively hating this film, I was a little nervous sitting down to watch this. I needn't have been though since it grabbed me from the get-go. The film is populated by the type of people I go out of my way to avoid at parties and cafés. I got the impression that Noah was laughing at the surfaceness of hipster life, everything is surface with almost nothing really going on. I laughed a lot. Greta Gerwig is wonderful in the lead role, making Frances somehow lovable at the same time as being borderline irritating. Add to that a cameo from one of my musical heroes (Dean Wareham), Hot Chocolate and '80s Bowie on the soundtrack and you've got a film that feels practically tailor made for me. It felt like it owed a huge debt to early French New Wave flicks too. Love that last shot. So good I almost found myself clapping over the credits. Almost.

 

By the way Clyde I didn't see the end as being late success at all, sure all her friends turned up and clapped and said polite things after the performance, but they're the sort of people that would go to the opening of a toilet seat if it included a complimentary glass of wine. The actual dance itself was borderline woeful, and I know Frances justifies that with her statement about liking things to look like mistakes, but I didn't spot any evidence to back that up throughout the film. Her biggest success is finally getting her own appartment I suppose.

Curious as to whether you've seen Leos Carax's Mauvais sang, which Baumbach rather shamelessly steals from with the scene of Frances running down the street to Bowie's Modern Love

 

I still think of the film fondly. My only real hesitation is that Baumbach seems a little unable of creating something which is both entirely his and still great. I've begun to see him as something of a low-key, more indie Tarantino.

I haven't seen that Clyde, but I'll add it to the list. Indie Tarantino, that's harsh I think he's a little better than that, at least he knows enough to keep his films around the ninety minute mark. Baumbach doesn't have a distinct style which is odd for someone who so obviously adores a huge number of film makers that have just that.
