Hey guys, i'm new here so i don't really know where i should be posting. I just wanted to ask some advices since i was looking for films kind of similar to Tanin No Kao/ The Face of Another. Every time i watch Teshigahara's trilogy i always end up searching similar films but without any results. So if you have some advices...well, shoot!

(I'm still hoping for Criterion Blu Ray releases of Suna no Onna and Tanin no Kao...maybe someday..)

To help I have some questions first: Are you specifically looking for Japanese (and particularly of the 60s)?  Are you into Yakuza, Kaiju, chambara films?  What is your Kurosawa, Ozu or Mizoguchi collection like?  Did you get Teshigahara's Antonio Gaudi documentary?

I know Duke can chime in on Japanese New Wave films.

First of all, thank you for the quick response. Secondly, i have to say that i've watched the entire filmography of Hiroshi Teshigahara, i just love him. I'm not a big Kurosawa fan even if i've watched all of his films but i am a huge Mizoguchi fan. When i said i was looking for films similar to Tanin no Kao i meant the overall feeling of the film. It is clearly avant-garde with some kind of psychological horror vibe to it. I love the photography and the pace which are both hunting. I'm not looking specifically for films with the same themes but i'd prefer japanese films.

Thanks.

It really is unfortunate. I absolutely love Teshigahara as well, but there is very little out there similar to Kōbō's source novels. Those three in the CC are the high mark on that too, I just wasn't as impressed with Man Without a Map.

You might try Shinoda's Double Suicide. I am having trouble thinking of any that would also be considered psych-horror as well as avant-garde.

A few that are close while missing some elements:

A Man Vanishes
Sword of Doom
Eros + Massacre
Funeral Parade of Roses

Blind Beast
Thirst for Love
Bullet Ballet
A Snake of June
Vital

It really is hard to say, and I hesitate to even recommend some of those. I will keep thinking on it.

Thank you very much Duke Togo. I've watched The Sword of Doom, Snake of June and Eros + Massacre but i haven't seen the other films you listed so i'll check them out for sure. Now, i don't want to abuse of your will to help but since i'm in a japanese mood, i'd like to ask for other suggestions on another type of films. I'm looking for some Japanese Murder Mystery films vaguely similar to The Inugami Family, Rhyme of Vengeance and The Devil's Ballad.

I'm a huge fan of the Persona videogame series, which is heavy influenced by the works of authors such as Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Seishi Yokomizo, who wrote the stories adapted for the screen by Kon Ichikawa. I'd like some murder mysteries set in small japanese towns, maybe with teenagers involved. But that may be too much to ask so i'll take anything.

Feel free to make any suggestions,

Thanks.

Back to your first question. Have you seen Kaneto Shindô's Onibaba? I'll second Double Suicide. Now I'll have to think about your second. Unfortunately my expertise is more in action from Japan (I do have a huge knowledge of Hong Kong films). Have you seen Nobuhiko Ôbayashi's House (1977)?

Now I'm suspecting you have seen the Japanese horror basics such as Ringu, Dark Water, Audition, Ju-on ...

Yes i have seen Onibaba but i didn't like it. I've watched House, which i liked a lot more. And yes i've seen Ringu, Audition, Ju-On, both the original and the remake. I haven't seen the original Dark Water,  though.

The original Dark Water is definitely worth watching for nice paced psychological horror.  It is another one of those Japanese horror films that work on the "big-town" psyche of barely populated apartments which really cannot be a reality where they live :).  Don't forget with Ju-on there was two shorts (released first on video; you can find them on the American release of the Japanese film as well) that came before the first full-length movie.  Both worth watching.  I'll think more on the second topic :).

Well i didn't know about the two shorts actually. Anyway if anyone can come up with some answers to my second question that'd be amazing. Thank you all for being so helpful.

Hi guys, i'm looking for some films that have a snowy setting, i mean films where snow kind of plays a big part. Since you helped me out before with other "strange" requests, i figured i could ask here for some suggestions. Thrillers or Adventure films that can be found on Blu Ray would be the best answers and obviously i'm not looking for the most notorious films such as Shining or The Thing. Do you have some ideas?

Thanks.

Off the top my head Fargo springs to mind first, then either of the Insomnia films, Doctor Zhivago, The Gold Rush and Låt den rätte komma in. That's all I can think of at the moment, hope it helps.

All films that i've watched at least a couple of times each. Well i've watched Let the Right One In just once...the original...and then the remake.

I wanted to watch The Ice Storm on Blu Ray since i've never watched it, is it any good? I was thinking about checking out 2010's Kray(The Edge) and i could also re-watch A Simple Plan...but i was looking for something i haven't already seen.

Important Snowy Settings (good to great films) not mentioned: Jeremiah Johnson, Runaway Train, Touching the Void, Into the Wild, Alive (pass me some of that buttock), Kekexili Mountain Patrol, Dersu Uzala. Better Off Dead (better put a comedy here)

This is a good list. I've seen Jeremiah Johnson, Into the Wild, Alive and obviously Dersu Uzala but i've never seen Runaway Train. I wonder how the snow fits in considering the film is set on a train. Oh, Better Off Dead...i've watched it right after Trey Parker and Matt Stone made a spoof out of it on South Park(Episode "Asspen").

I was thinking about mentioning Dersu Uzala, but couldn't recall to what degree snow played a part. Better Off Dead is a great mention.   :D

Technically any ski film or survival film in the cold, cold wilderness will be apt for his criteria.  It is important enough in Dersu :D.  I'm thinking there is a good chance he has not seen that or The Idiot.  I like both of those Kurosawa and they are lesser known among his ouevre.

hee hee, I'm a big fan of The Grey so I'll add that as well.

I want my two dollars!
