Edited my list

Of Fellini and Bunuel I have seen 7 each. I certainly need to improve on both especially since I like Bunuel so much. Of Renoir I am now up at 10 since I watched Sur un air de Charleston last night (a bit bizarre especially since his later work is much more formal :( aka no under and over cranked dancing from blackfaced explorer). I have seen all the Criterion Renoirs, but I have a three-disc set (which I think you have also) which I need to work on. I'll probably buy the Bunuels on Criterion I do not own this week.

I added Renoir to my list.

Yeah I have it and loved it. I only have to watch Nana and I don't think I'm gonna watch it soon since its 2h and silent... Can't stand in front of the tv for 2 consecutive hours in these times except for Desplechin movies...

The most I can say is that I've seen 17 features and 1 short by Ozu Yasujirô. I've also seen 11 features by Robert Bresson, and 10 features by Ôshima Nagisa.

I've also seen (not counting shorts)...

I don't get the purpose in this thread Opale. Is it just fun or bragging or what? There's certainly no room for discussion when only sharing a number.

I've seen 14 movies directed by Ernst Lubitsch. What now?

Maybe it is to personally track how far you are to completing a directors work.

I finished off Whit Stillmans filmography last week, should i go have a cookie now?

That would be one crazy set. I would probably go insane around number 231 (of course not all of his works are extant -- after 100 plus shorts on the wonderfulness of the South (the South will rise again ...). I like his works to a point (as long as it is not about the South :P).

Bragging rights :P. I'm a bit number oriented so I just update for fun. There was this same type of thread on the old site -- not excussing the participation (though I do keep links to most of the directors I list :P).

^What did you think of Esther Kahn?

It is very good, Desplechin was adapting the story as Esther was a wild child but trying to learn how to act. The story was also very well told. For example, when she is with Nathan, an older actor, and they are alone on the stage, Desplechin shows us how she don't really listen to him but how she is happy to simply be there on a stage but what Nathan is saying is very interesting. Just the sensation of being in her own environment (reminds me when I moved in town and found myself more at my place far from my racist and homophobic village). Also I loved the fact that this film is far from being a success story, Esther was just that little wild child that grew and became what she wanted without any consecration. She got her first role but she didn't needed it. It makes the play very human. Why not say more than human! Since Desplechin is really confronting the reality and fiction to make his tale, I think More that human would be a nice expression to talk about his films. The ending is great for showing how Esther the little girl that doesn't knows a lot of things might in fact live her life quite honestly with herself more than anybody else...

I think that the fact Desplechin is able to show us the soul of her character might make Esther Kahn one of his most well directed movie even if its not my favorite of him...

A few I'm trying to complete:

Robert Bresson - 11/13
Ozu Yasujirô - 29/36 (surviving)
Naruse Mikio - 14/89 (a pipe dream really)
Yoshida Yoshishige - 14/20
Terayama Shūji - 7/8
Artavazd Peleshian - 7/8
João César Monteiro - 9/11
Hou Hsiao-hsien - 11/18
Edward Yang - 4/7
Philippe Garrel - 9/16
Aleksandr Sokurov - 13/~22?
Tsai Ming-liang - 8/9
Werner Herzog - 12/27
Pedro Costa - 6/7
Hong Sang-soo - 6/9
Kawase Naomi - 7/12

Finished!
Andrei Tarkovsky - 7/7
Víctor Erice - 3/3
Šarūnas Bartas - 7/7

Opale, I got the Michel Brault Œuvres set in today, so I'm going to work through that this next week. I'm also going to try to see Les bons débarras some point in the future. I really want to see Pierre Perrault's Le règne du jour, but I can't find it anywhere. On a non-Québécois note, I'm also seeing Esther Kahn (my first by Desplechin) soon as well.

Kiss my ass
