Emir Kusturica is the best director alive. He created his own world like fellini and really understood the basis of surrealism by having his own surrealist element (ducks, no smoking orchestra) like Bunuel. He is also a great musician and composer with his band, The no smoking orchestra, he plays everywhere in the world... His songs and movies are full of energy and mixed emotions. I really don't understand why he is so unknown in America...

Everything :P
I love this short from super 8 stories:

Unza Unza Time

In the beginning at the boring time
back in 1999
The man killed the line
between punishment and the crime

On the planet Earth
there was no more fun
no sex no drugs no rock'n'roll
all music turned to a fashion show

White man had British pop
and black man had soul
But no, not a drop of a blood
'cause video killed the rock'n'roll

and God said “Oh my God!”
What's happened to the human being
What's happened to my lovely creatures
They all become a cold machine
No more love no more power
Machine without gasoline
Wake up Wake up crowd
Wake up from your boring dream

There is lighting
there is thunder
What's up with you I wonder
Lift your shoulders
stamp your feet
produce the extra protein
I'm gonna hit you hit you hit you hit you
hit you with my rythm stick
So let there be light
Let there be sound
let there be a music divine
It's Unza Unza Unza Unza time

:)

I can highly recommend these:

Black Cat, White Cat
Time of the Gypsies
Underground

They're all very imaginative and entertaining films. They could've been cut a little shorter though. The hectic and chaotic atmospheres can feel a bit heavy sometimes..

Yeah, Kusturica sure has a good (and absurd) sense of humor. And I love the way he uses animals in his films.

I see many of you have bought Kusturica's "Black Cat, White Cat" recently. I really love it. Post some thoughts to the Kusturica thread (director database) if you will.

I saw it yesterday and it was great!!! Kusturica is really a genius! There is so many little details, in the decor or some damn funny background action that makes so smile during the whole movie. Can't wait to watch it again!

I saw Life is a miracle last week and its as great as Underground and Black cat white cat. Can't belive that he is so unknown!

His next film: Cool Water (2011)
Turbulent comedy about two Palestinian brothers who smuggle the dead body of their father from Jerusalem to Ramallah with the Israeli Police, a bunch of terrorists and the Russian Mafia breathing down their necks.
