And to keep up the Criterion-ness of the potential remakes on this thread... Videodrome. With the f'wit behind Arlington Road, Scream 3 and The Skeleton Key as the prime creative force.

(apparently we've run out of late 70s horror films to remake, so we're onto the early 80s now)

The Man Who Fell To Earth

I work at a mall movie theater, and this sort of thing makes me want to leave forever every day. Of the 43 films we've released so far in 2009, 11 have been remakes/sequels/from TV. Thats over 25%. That's really fucked how much that is, and its only gonna be more this summer.

Actually there is a good chance that The Red Circle will not be made. Liam Neeson is currently signed to a (good for this column) remake of "Clash of the Titans". That article says he is going to do production afterwords on The Red Circle but I still have some doubts about that (I have to find the pertinent interview that has some good information on the problems with getting The Red Circle off the ground).

Unfortunately there is a chance that two of To's films The Mission and The Mad Detective will be remade:

http://www.variety.c...2...yId=13&cs=1

""Rush Hour" producer Arthur Sarkissian has acquired rights to remake "The Mad Detective" and "The Mission," two crime thrillers directed by Hong Kong helmer Johnnie To."

I have yet to see The Mad Detective (waiting for my copy :D), but I don't see how you could improve on The Mission (unfortunately no R1).

Yeah, I'm split on whether or not I would want a Le Cercle Rouge remake. On one hand, no, remakes tend to be below average and simply unneeded, but on the other hand, I very much enjoy Johnny To's films, and curious to see what he could do with it. So, we'll just see if it does ever get made.

About Mad Detective and The Mission, yeah, both are GREAT. And yeah, I finally did get a chance to check out The Mission, definitely great stuff. Mad Detective is great stuff as well, and recommend checking it out. Very nice to see Masters of Cinema take some interest in Johnnie To, would love to see Criterion do the same as there are plenty of his films that need a non-shitty quality release on DVD.

Drop Dead Fred

Drop Dead Russell Brand's career. This may be an actual case in which the remake is greater than the original. The original being so awful that any attempt to make it again by definition is a superior effort.

Wow...didn't realize there was that many in the works. Shame

ZERO DARK THIRTY
The film revolves around a U.S. Army solider named Andy Woodward, who returns home from Afghanistan -- weeks after his own funeral. His family and friends are further stunned once they realize all signs of the old Andy are gone, and a zombie of sorts has taken his place.

I'm guessing that's a remake to Bob Clark's DEATHDREAM?

I read somewhere that Ridley Scott is contemplating returning to Alien. My bad this is not a remake (damn, where is that sequel/prequel thread).
I don't usually try grass

David Mamet is doing the remake of Kurosawa's High and Low...that one at least might turn out to be alright?!

Although I'm not the biggest fan of Mamet, I would definitely see that out of sheer curiosity. Although the current trend in remakes is churning out regurgitated films that were fine on their own, every once in a very great while there is a remake that's quite awesome.

Cape Fear (1962->1991) comes to mind.
