Further indication that they are continuing to dredge the lowest depths in search for the easiest vehicle in which to make a quick buck.

Although the current trend in remakes is churning out regurgitated films that were fine on their own, every once in a very great while there is a remake that's quite awesome.

In my opinion the best remake is Cronenberg's The Fly. The story differs quite much from the original though.

^ I would tend to say that The Maltese Falcon is one of the top remakes in film history.

John Carpenter's The Thing also comes to mind.

Got to agree with this. That and Ben Hur. Actually I liked the original films too though.

Clyde, when you were writing about pre-code films Ben Hur is always one I think of with its disregard for human life (quite possible some people died during one of the battles), nudity (always throws me off when there is nudity in silent film :D) and great chariot race.

Heavy Metal isn't a remake. The project is in turnaround and likely canned altogether after Paramount didn't want to do it. Fincher was only going to produce and direct the framing device, the cartoons were going to be directed by Zac Snyder and Gore Verbinski and other awful directors.

Currently his latest project that he's attached to is Chef with Keanu Reeves. Heavy Metal, Black Hole, The Killer are all in turnaround or have been abandoned. (Too bad, Black Hole could have been something special)

Yeah, I'm split on whether or not I would want a Le Cercle Rouge remake. On one hand, no, remakes tend to be below average and simply unneeded, but on the other hand, I very much enjoy Johnny To's films, and curious to see what he could do with it. So, we'll just see if it does ever get made.
...

Well it is possibly back on:

JT: "it is absolutely one of my priorities as you can see (points to the wall where script notes are plastered.) “Death of a Hostage,” which is a Hong Kong production through Media Asia, is probably what I’ll shoot next. Then, hopefully, “Red Circle.”

Considering Hollywood rarely does a remake that's any good, I can see it being just as bad as the original.

I know this is pushing this slightly off topic, but when I was watching Pusher the other night I did wonder just why it hadn't been remade for the American market.

Since I don't share your opinion and i'm always right I'll say "You're an idiot" :P

Seriously, I completely understand that many people disliked it but I think it get better and better each time I rewatch it...

I can't disagree with that considering I only saw it once, but from my first viewing, I was higly diasppointed considering the subject matter that could have been dealt with in a much more suspenseful way.

^It's not a remake. It's like a sequel/prequel thing.

It actually has nothing to do with the original at all. Herzog had never seen the film or even heard of Abel Fererra until he started making this. He basically just stole the title.

...again.

Is that even legal?

Remaking your own film is understandable as long as it's for an entirely new audience. Remaking another's film is a little douchey, and rarely lives up to - let alone surpasses - the original... but remaking your own remake?

Isn't that a little like masturbating to a video of yourself masturbating?

Croney just dropped 80,000 cool points in my book.
