I picked up Supercop today, knowing that it had a couple of edits.

On the one hand, I want to get all the spine numbers support DD for bringing out uncut/subbed flicks with good extras, but on the other hand, I want to punish them for botching several titles. But then, there's the risk that if the sales aren't good, the whole line may disappear (with no guarantee of a better competitor arising to fill the void.) Plus, if DD went under, the Weinsteins might go back to releasing the rest of their catalog in butchered dub versions only with little extras, or they might just sit on the titles they have (including all those Shaws,) so that the US won't see many of them at all...

Unfortunately the only message they receive if nobody buys them is a lack of interest. A boycott as well as letters from fans explaining what is wrong could send the right message, but perhaps it is better to give them business and send letters, because like you said, lack of sales get plugs pulled. I am curious every time someone mention that they are taking their time with The Killer because of the Hard Boiled fiasco, what exactly that means. Why would it be pushed back so much when all we are talking about is not making mistakes? Does it really take months and months extra just to make sure things are done right? Could the delay be because a legit do-over of a proper subtitle translation instead of the originally planned dubtitles? Even then, would that really take this long? What I am afraid of is that they may be reconsidering the release because of the lackluster sales of Hard Boiled, and that someone in the chain that only sees the numbers may have made that call.

In summary, buy the spines to secure a future, but send the complaints to DD instead of posting them on forums like everyone else. If the entire fanbase of every label would do this we would likely all be better off.

I know this is OT, but it relates to marital arts on film. Its kind of funny. Select downloads to see the video.

Bump for Genre forum?

It wasn't quite the 3 for 10 sale mentioned earlier in the thread, but I still managed to find a few of the DD titles for about ~5.50 each at Suncoast/FYE: Above the Law, My Young Auntie (already watched,) and Crime Story.

Also, I picked up the modern SB film, Drunken Monkey.

I'm not sure it quite fits in a genre thread. Both Shaw Brothers and to a much lesser extent Dragon Dynasty cross genres. Shaw Brother's films have everything from Kung Fu, Wuxia, musicals (most of these are not on DVD), historical, soft-core, horror while DD has action, kung fu, wuxia and one Johnnie To .

I like both Above the Law and Crime Story (no need to talk about My Young Auntie since you've seen), but both have the problems. Even though Kirk Wong directed most of Crime Story, Jackie did take over (as well as had final say on editing) so it is not the most cohesive film. Above the Law (aka Righting Wrongs) does have some excellent Yuen Biao fight scenes. I'm not the biggest Cynthia Rothrock fan, but those who like her well she is in it :P.

I own but still have not watched Drunken Monkey. Littlefuzzy tell what you think of it when you get to it (a positive will bump it up on my rotation a negative will keep in in the cupboard literally with The Grudge 2 and some Bruce Li films that one day I'll get to. I like Jacky Wu so I'm curious on his action sequences in that movie.

I still need to get Black Tavern (added to my DVD wish list so I will not forget this time). I have seen the other two (both have R1 releases) both fine though I really hold Come Drink With Me in high regards.

My top 5 action movies from Shaw Brothers Studio would be:

36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978): The role that would stereotype Gordon Liu and make Shaolin martial art films special again.
The Magic Blade (1976): Chor Yuen's most beautifully made wuxia film. Love the dead town.
One Armed Swordsman (1967): Chang Cheh's most well known film and the movie that helped turn the tide towards male dominated heroic bloodshed movies (and Stephen Teo would tout homoerotic themes) and make the former swimmer Wang Yu a star (well at least in one-armed films).
Dirty Ho (1979): Well the name does not say all (the Cantonese title is Rotten head Ho), but certainly some of the most unique fights and one of Lau Kar Leung's best directed movies.
Come Drink With Me (1966): King Hu's direction is brilliant, he ushered in a new age of martial arts cinema and who can forget Cheng Pei Pei.

Ha, ha ha ha ha ha eh; with the financial problems that DD has had and with their lack of interest in older titles that they hold the rights too there may not be anymore DD Shaw releases. If there is I would expect Five Deadly Venoms to be next of the Shaw to be released.

Heroes of the East is a fine film. Since it is directed by Lau Kar-Leung expect excellent fight scenes.

Any idea why there are two versions of Robin-B-Hood, with completely different covers and even UPC symbols? The spine # was the same, but the studio catalog number was different as well, I believe. I *THINK* they had the same special features.

This isn't just a case of early concept art, because I actually saw multiples of each version new at Hastings...

Both were 2-disc, with slipcovers.

I have no idea why they did that. I did not know about the second version until I saw it on amazon and I thought the second version might just be cover art that never made it to public (until you said you saw it at hastings). I have never seen the second version (I have the first) for sale other than online. They should have the same special features. Here's my review of the film and the extra features.

Here is nice interview with Bey Logan of Dragon Dynasty from HKFlix.

A couple of tidbits:
The Killer is still going to come out on Dragon Dynasty (he states soon).
No real news on blu-ray.
His opinion on Chang Cheh or Lau Kar-Leung.
His favorite Asian action releases the past few years (these are no brainers). Though he likes Machine Girl which I have not seen yet because of the so-so comments from several I know who have.
And more.

Well, Deep Discount's sale gave me a few more Dragon Dynasties, and quite a few more Shaws!

Legend of Fong Sai Yuk - Dragon Dynasty
Come Drink With Me - Dragon Dynasty (Shaw Brothers)
King Boxer - Dragon Dynasty (Shaw Brothers)
^ I was mistaken in my earlier post, I thought I only had one more Shaw to get from DD instead of two.

Martial Club - Media Blasters
Ten Tigers of Kwangtung - Media Blasters
Heroes Two - Media Blasters
Challenge of the Masters - Media Blasters
Black Magic 2 - Media Blasters
Opium & the Kung Fu Master - BCI
The Heroic Ones - Well Go
Duel of the Century - Well Go
Journey of the Doomed - Well Go

I also ordered a couple of others, but I haven't got them yet:
Flash Point 2-disc - Dragon Dynasty
The Deadly Duo - Media Blasters
Life Gamble - BCI

When I get those, I'll be current on the Media Blasters, BCI, and Well Go discs. Of course, there are all of the Image DVDs, I only have 1 right now (House of Traps). Black Magic and Super Inframan will probably be the next ones I get. Did any of the Image titles come with slipcovers, or anything special packed inside? I know there was a poster on Black Magic, or was it just a mail-in offer?

I think I'm going to have to have a Shaw Brothers month, once I finish this Stargate SG-1 Complete Series that has been taking up all my time...

EDIT:
I had another Dragon Dynasty question... I know all of the 2-disc sets (with a couple of exceptions) have had slipcovers, and I thought NONE of the single discs did, but I think I recently saw The Empress & the Warriors with a slipcover, but it said "Special Collector's Edition" like the other single discs. Have there been any others with slipcovers? For that matter, has anyone seen The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk with a slipcover?

My brother ended up getting Black Magic with a slipcover. I never found it with one.

Later I will post what I know has slipcovers and not for Dragon Dynasty. All the 2-discs had one while "An Empress & the Warriors" did too. I do not remember any other single disc DD having one. I will check later. I don't think my Black Magic has a poster but I know there was some special offers for a few too. Now if you had signed up for Image release information they gave you several postcards with a movie on it. I got several through the mail (I should probably put up a pick sometime) but they seemed to stop doing it. I will check my Legend of Fong Sai Yuk later also :headbang:.

My brother ended up getting Black Magic with a slipcover. I never found it with one.

Alas!

I know the whole thing about The Protector being very hard to find with a slipcover, if it ever had one... And I've heard that the Royal Tramp collection did NOT have a cover, despite being a 2-disc set.

One thing I did find out was that small poster were sent to Blockbusters for several of the Image/Shaw Brother's releases. My brother ended up snagging mini-posters for The Boxer's Omen and Cave of the Silken Web.

My The Protector does not have a slip cover and neither does the Royal Tramp.

For some reason, they threw a slipcover on The 5 Deadly Venoms, even though the only extra is the commentary. I wonder if they are going to put slipcovers on all single-disc titles from now on (starting with An Empress and the Warrior).

I have heard that there are a couple of trailers included on the disc (without sound?), but not accessible from a menu. Someone mentioned that they might play automatically if you let the menu sit for a while.

I'm not sure why they are putting slipcovers on the last two releases (I have seen both by the way -- Five Deadly Venoms is easily worth watching).

For Five Deadly Venoms: If you put the disc in and let it sit it will go through the obnoxious start with trailers that happens on many of their discs. However those trailers as you state are not accessible via the menu. The trailers for Five Deadly Venoms are nothing new though for An Empress and the Warrior has one of a movie that is not on their label (I forgot the name, but it does not look very good). I know The Rebel is advertised on both (OK Vietnam action film).

Anyways I'm glad they put out Five Deadly Venoms -- it ended up being quite a good MA film with a decent story. Interesting because Chang Cheh's storytelling was getting worse and worse in the late 70s (well he stopped caring as much about the story) though it does fit in his normal themes of homosocial interaction (Stephen Teo loves to use this word when describing Cheh) though not as much as his earlier Ti Lung/David Chiang films.
