Wow, I wish I had the extra 400 bucks to spend on this, but that is a lot considering I already own all of the Kurosawa Criterion DVDs plus I have seen them all except for The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail.

I do wish Horse was included. I also wonder if they will go back and give spine #'s to the rest of the non-criterionized films.

Wow, I wish I had the extra 400 bucks[...]

$300, if you preorder now.

I also wonder if they will go back and give spine #'s to the rest of the non-criterionized films.

Probably not. At least not for a very long while, and spread out over time.

I'd put money on it just because quite honestly, Criterion has been irritating me with some of their decisions lately and it would unfortunately be in character. Here's hoping I'm wrong, but optimism can let you down and the pessimist has nowhere to go but up.

Hmm the four films will be released as stand alone DVD's in the end. I can wait, since if we're going to be honest here they're not going to be anywhere near Kurosawa's best work. At best they are going to be curiosity pieces (for me anyway). I tend to think of Stray Dog as his first genuinely masterful film, and that was made in '49. Jump in a correct me if I'm wrong though since I haven't seen any of the four 'exclusives'.

I knew it was unlikely, but I was really hoping for this to be on Blu-ray... as it is, I alrady own 21 of them and the book (which is GREAT, by the way).

I really liked Sanshiro Sugata. It make not be a masterwork but it was a strong film that had Kurosawa's style written all over it, unfortunately part 2 was the same story, but with strong forced anit-American propaganda.

Madadayo is one of my least favorite Kurosawa films. Too sentimental and too offvise Kurosawa is contemplating his own end.

Too bad Derza Uzala was not included. It would have made the set a must buy for me.

And The Quiet Duel is missing. Many of us have seen all the Criterion/Eclipse releases (I've seen all the R1 releases and own all but Dersu Uzala) from Kurosawa so this does not seem like a feasible fiscally conservative purchase :). With more space and more money I could see possibly getting it though I'm more concerned about the previously R1 unreleased one.

Madadayo is certainly not one of my least favorite Kurosawa films. I like contemplative, I liked the visuals, I liked the situation, I liked the comedy and even the cat situation moved me.

Lawrence, actually many consider (including Donald Richie and Kurosawa -- one of the benefits of keeping one copy of this book at work and one at home ) that Drunken Angel is his first masterpiece or first major picture.

"In this picture I was finally myself. It was my picture. I was doing it and no one else." -- Akira Kurosawa
"Nonetheless, Drunken Angel remains, for most Japanese, Kurosawa's "first picture" and its evocation of the early postwar years, both their misery and their freedom, has made it one of the director's most revived films." -- Donald Richie "The Films of Akira Kurosawa" 3rd Ed.

I did consider Drunken Angel when I wrote that, but although it's a cracking film, it still feels like Kurosawa is getting close to his eventual genius as a director, something I thought Stray Dog finally achieved. It might just be that I watched Stray Dog this week so it's at the forefront of my mind, more so than Drunken Angel.

I like both and Stray Dog is probably the better film (I look forward to rewatching both of those), but I just had to whip out the quotes . Anways I think Criterion fans should watch both.

Now the question is what film would you (or anyone here) first recommend (that is easily available) to someone new to Kurosawa (then I think the box set would be a good gift for friends of you rich people like little fuzzy or sam)?

Personally I wouldn't start off with the Eclipse set. If they were limited in money (or I was going to lend them one) I'm not sure I would start off with Drunken Angel or Stray Dog. I have personnally lent out Yojimbo the most times followed by Seven Samurai (I have not had a person yet not like these two while I have had one person not like Ikiru). The one thing that has surprised me is how much people of different backgrounds have liked these films (its a good feeling when someone who you think would prefer something else liked Yojimbo more than Lone Wolf and Cub).

For me it's always Yojimbo or Sanjuro that I tell people to start with. No one has ever been disappointed by those two, after that the obvious Seven Samurai & Rashomon. From there I think you can jump in anywhere and be happy, both The Bad Sleep Well & High & Low are great choices for a 'modern' film by him though.

I agree completely Yojimbo or Seven Samurai certainly should be the Kurosawa gateway drug, however if your friends have a bias for B&W movies I'd reccomend Kagemucha or Ran and somewhat work backwards.

Too bad Ran could not make it into the set either. So far it is missing 2 out of 3 of my favorite Kurosawa films.

Luckily I don't have too many friends/acquaintances with bias against black and white and/or subtitles (I do know some people that do but I usually don't lend them anything ). I would probably lend Ran out before Kagemusha because Ran has usually gotten a better response in the past (Ran is one of my favorite movies of all time too).

I too take that gateway philosophy. Try to get people hooked with certain product then eventually if you can warp them with more esoteric products :). But with people you tend to lend films once in a while you have to go for certain products you know (hope) they will like. Sometimes it is a crap-shoot. My girlfriend's favorite Kurosawa is Ikiru while I lent that to a doctor (a cardiac electro-physiologist) who tends to prefer action over substance he just had too much problems with the style of acting and the fact the doctor's did not tell him he was ill (though that was common during that time).

I agree the missing of Ran is a big hole in that collection. I wonder how well that set will sell?

Well considering that the majority of Kurosawa fans that are into Criterion already own at least two thirds or more of that set, I'd say it's going to sell pretty badly.

(I have not had a person yet not like these two while I have had one person not like Ikiru).

To me Ikiru is an absolutely beautiful film and Takashi Shimura is brilliant in it, the best I have seen of him. I am amazed that someone wouldn't like this film.

I can see the causal movie goer being put off by Ikiru, because of the sudden shift in the film. Thier lose.

I was suprised he didn't like it (as I mentioned above). He is certainly not a "dumb" person (he is a a cardiac electro-physiologist for goodness sake) but his cinematic acumen is not as well-refined as the Criterion-yokels here .

Ikiru is one of my top 100 films, but you name the film you will find someone who doesn't like it.

This box set didn't excite me like the Fox Ford box set did (though the design of that box sucks) and some others so I agree with Lawrence that this set might not do great, but I may be biased because I'm a Criterion snob.

I just hope Criterion does not punish consumers by making nonspine numbered films exclusive to the box set. It would seem unfair to long term collectors like many of us. Come on Criterion do the right thing. Give those film spine numbers.

Agree 100% with Lawrence, why double dip if you already own the majority of these, just wait until they individually re-release and update the old and present the new ones with spines. And who would want to buy this when you know it doesnt have the AWESOME Seven Samurai packaging, but instead a stupid looking shoebox.
