I really don't think so. The scenes are constructed in a very calculated way to have the effect that they do. On one hand, it is a very gratifying, gratuitiously violent scene and it's immensely entertaining, enjoyable, and bold in its rewriting of history. But Tarantino is such a self-reflexive filmmaker that there's almost always more to it than that.

Okay. Time will tell I guess. You're the first person I've ever heard that sees so much in his work though. Like I've said to me it rings hollow, but there's no point in going round and round on this since we both obviously have vastly different opinions.

What about Jackie Brown ? That film is a really sophisticated examination of aging, underneath the caper plot.

I guess I don't understand the argument, because I don't see how Tarantino's films are more superficial than many other filmmakers that people love. Then again, I don't really think my argument is a stretch at all, so it may just be a case of different strokes.

Jackie Brown is his best film in that way, but not having read the book I'm unsure of how much of this is down to Quentin and how much of it is Elmore Leonard. I just don't see Tarantino as a genius film maker in the way that PT Anderson, Spike Lee, Robert Altman or Martin Scorsese are. He is really good at breathing new life into old genre flicks. He's absolutely fantastic at that, just think about Pulp Fiction and what he managed there. The boxer throwing a fight, the mob guy who fancies the boss's wife, both tales I've seen umpteen times before, but Tarantino manages to give them a new twist and makes them shine in a new way so that it doesn't feel reheated but instead something totally fresh. Which is great. But what he doesn't do (and I don't believe it's on his agenda either) is have anything to say about the world we live in. Let's kill Hitler that'll be cool, let's make it really bloody, that'll be even cooler.

Since Christmas day, I've seen the film twice more, and I'm prepared to call it Tarantino's best film. My respect for it has only deepened. Not since Jackie Brown has Tarantino created such full, rich characters, and here he even surpasses that movie with characters like Calvin Candie and Dr. King Schultz, possibly his most complete character to date. On top of this you have Jamie Foxx's brilliant portrayal of the almost mythological title character, a performance that is easily the film's greatest revelation for me personally. Add to this a genuinely emotionally engaging plot, Tarantino's typically brilliant use of music, and some of the greatest crowd-pleasing moments in recent memory, and you have the best film of the year, in my book.

I can't wait to see this now. Absolutely everyone is gushing about how great it is, and I'm certain that if anything can live up to the hype it's this. It opens here on 18/1. I should manage to see it first week if all goes to plan.

I saw it yesterday. It was AWESOME. My fiance, who does not like a lot of my movies, absolutely loved it too. It really is that good of a movie. I admit, I am a huge Tarantino fanboy, but this is absolutely his best film. From me that says a lot as Pulp Fiction is currently at the top of my 100 Blows.

Christoph Waltz deserves a second Oscar as well. He is absolutely sublime.
