I know we've got the sci-fi thread in Genres, but I figured something as big as Star Trek deserved it's own thread...

Obviously, mikesncc1701 is a fan, as am I. I know there are several others here, as well.

Do you have a favorite series?
TOS - the show that started it all, I have a great familiarity with the characters, although looking back objectively, many of the special effects were cheesy, and some of the storylines weren't much better (while some were brilliant).

TAS (the Animated Series) - I haven't actually SEEN any of this, although I own it now. I have read most of the log books, though.

TOS Movies - Better effects, TMP was a bit odd (uniforms, Ilya), 2-4 were good, 5 was funky, 6 was OK

TNG - While I grew up with the original in re-runs, I grew up watching this as it aired. I am as familiar with the TNG crew as I am TOS, and there were some great stories this time around. They were able to do longer arcs, as well.

DS9 - Fun stuff, basically a sequel to TNG, although it's set on a station instead of ship. I think I enjoy this about as much as TNG, although I am not as familiar with the crew.

Voyager - I like it, but I haven't seen some of it...

Enterprise -I liked what I saw of it, but I haven't seen much. I was already familiar with Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap, so that helped.

Star Trek (2009) - Frankly, I think I would have preferred something that could be slotted into standard continuity, rather than the giant reset button. I enjoyed the movie for what it was (as if it hadn't been a ST movie), and I liked most of the cast. Zachary Quintano made a good Spock, although I've seen too much Heroes to forget about Sylar completely. Simon Pegg was great as Scotty, although he isn't Scottish...

Do you read any of the novels, or like any other non-TV/Movie Star Trek media (comics, games, etc.)?
I've got quite a few of the Star Trek novels, although I haven't read any for ~10 years... I decided to rectify that, so in the past month, I've read the original episode adaptions by James Blish, the two New Voyages books from Bantam, 12 of the 14 novels from Bantam, and 30 of the Original Series novels from Pocket. In the past, I've read many of the TNG novels, and some DS9, but I'm behind on the other series.

I've also liked the video games, although I prefer adventure games to "starship simulators". I've got a fairly good run of the early TNG comics, but there are a lot I don't have. I wouldn't mind seeing all of the ST comics coming out in graphic novel format, nowaadays I really prefer that to individual comics.

I'm going to have marathon the TV series and movies one of these days, but the only thing I one in complete sets is TNG and the Animated Series. I've got a lot of random episodes on Laserdisc of TOS, TNG, DS9, and maybe VOY, that I got at clearance prices about 10 years ago (~$5-8 a disc, 2 episodes per disc).

^James Doohan wasn't Scottish either. He was Canadian and fashioned the character after the Scottish because he believed them to be great engineers and inventors. It's also quite fascinating that it was he who gave us the Klingon language.

I haven't seen every episode of every series but I would rank them as this right now.

TOS
TAS
ENT
VOY
DS9
TNG

Season 4 of Enterprise contained some of the best writing Trek had ever seen. It was filled with numerous 2, 3, and 4 parters that filled in a large amount of questions in Trek history. I can't go into anymore without ruining it but if your a Trek fan, and even hate the series. That entire season is worth watching, especially for the 2 part "In A Mirror Darkly" which ties into TOS episode "The Tholian Web".

As far as the films go, I enjoy all of them. I thought Trek XI was pretty damn awesome myself. I'm glad they didn't try to insert anything into current continuity. I'd rather them have something to themselves that doesn't try to impede on what I already know and love. I've never understood that hatred for The Final Frontier. It has some of the best character moments in Original Series history and the story was basically a long, epic episode of TOS. Of course the Nic Meyer films (Khan, and Undiscovered Country) are the best of the bunch but I consider The Motion Picture to be more artistic because of the themes it explores.

I've read quite a few of the novels. A couple that stick out are Dreadnought and Battle Stations! by Diane Carey. Those were just outstanding. I also enjoyed the first 4 New Frontier novels, The Captain's Table series, and a 3 part series called My Brother's Keeper focusing on Kirk and Gary Mitchell's friendship from their first missions on the U.S.S. Republic to events that occur in TOS episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before".

Years back I was a trekker, going to several conventions, watching all the episodes etc... But mainly for me it was TOS, TNG, a bit of DS9, the movies and some of the books (but mostly manuals and of course the great Shatner and Nimoy biographies; if you are real fan you have read Tek War :P).

I haven't been much of a fan of lately (though I could always go back to TOS and the movies) mainly because my time has been spent with the movies in general.

I know littlefuzzy has taken these:
Here is the Ultimate Star Trek Quiz (in JavaScript)
And the unfinished basic quiz (in Java)

I made lieutenant, 64% or so...

I've always sucked at names and dates...

I forgot to mention that I worked a full shift at Arby's Roast Beef in a Klingon outfit one Halloween, I won a costume contest that night at a local board game (and Magic: the Gathering) shop.

It was actually my brother's Klingon costume, the "head crab" had been made for him by a (semi-?)professional make-up designer.

I have a question:

Do you think Shatner was the "Star" of the original series, and every one else was just a supporting cast? Do you think it should have been more of an ensemble work?

I've been watching some Star Trek documentaries, and I've seen Shatner refer to himself as the star, and others (cast, crew) have mentioned the same thing. He got the highest salary, none of the conflicts with management that the others had, etc.

I think this led to some rensentment and dissatisfaction among some of the other crew. Of course, we're familiar with Uhura's plight of basically being a glorified switchboard operator (Nichelle Nichols was thinking of leaving at the end of the first season), and Sulu & Chekov wern't much better, basically doing their helm and navigation duties, while Scotty was usually hidden down in Engineering. If it wasn't solely Kirk, it was Kirk & Spock, or Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.

As a kid, I saw it more as a team effort, although looking back I can see how much of it was about Kirk. Of course, as the captain of the ship, he's going to be in the forefront of things. I think I would have preferred something that was a bit more team oriented, looking at TNG, you can see that each person brings unique skills to the table. After watching the 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, I can see some similarities, it was a show that was all about Hawkeye, and the rest were just his foils. I think that show would have been better off with more of a team look as well.

I think I don't often realize just how much Shatner-oriented the original series was, as I have read most of the original series novels, and many of those really help to develop those secondary characters. Some of the books even move one or more of those characters to the forefront, and Kirk is himself an ancillary character in the story.

As I said earlier, TNG had more of a team concept from the beginning, DS9 has a team but Sisko has to make the tough decisions regarding the station, the Bajorran planet, the wormhole, and the Cardassians. Voyager goes even further on the team concept, since they all have to depend on one another to survive and make it back home. I really haven't seen enough of Enterprise to know how their dynamic is set up.

Looking at the new movie, I think they are hitting that team dynamic a lot better than they did in the original series; they were re-introducing the characters, but at the same time they are familiar characters with almost 45 years of history to the fans.

EDIT:
I was watching Mind Meld as I typed this, and just now (about 50 minutes in), Shatner touches on this very subject...

If it wasn't solely Kirk, it was Kirk & Spock, or Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.
...

Shatner was the star of the original series and Shatner new it. This angered pretty much everyone on the set (even Nimoy who would talk a bit about it in I am Not Spock and I am Spock I believe, its been awhile since I've gone over those; though Nimoy would later become friends with Shatner) and it has been discussed Ad Nauseum in many other sources particually the books like To the Stars: The Autobiography of George Takei, Star Trek's Mr. Sulu (a fun read; I recommend it little fuzzy) and heck even Shatner discusses it a bit in his books like Star Trek Memories (another must read for you Fuzzy). I'm thinking out of the actors only DeForrest Kelly didn't care that much (I haven't read his book yet though) while Doohan hated his guts for the rest of his life.

Shatner was known at the time for taking scenes from other actors and inserting himself. He stated it was for the good of the show :D.

I've been watching TNG, and I'm midway through season 3 right now (I just finished Yesterday's Enterprise). I'm watching "The Offspring", which is the episode with Data's daughter Lal, and a couple of her lines had me laughing out loud.

EDIT: Ya know, I forgot how emotionally charged this episode was, I think I would say it's one of my favorite episodes so far.

I'm still reading the original series books, I'm up to about #75 on the Pocket Books series.

Well, 45 years ago today the first episode of Star Trek aired. Any of you other nerds going to do anything in celebration? I plan on watching The Man Trap (being it's the first episode that aired) and maybe one of the movies, not sure which one yet.

I'm bad with dates (First Contact day, the first airing of ST), but I've been watching Enterprise during August and September, I'm a few episodes into season 3 right now.

What do you think so far? Enterprise had some of the best writing (especially in Season 4) for a Trek series. I never understood why it was so hated.
