A few other notable releases for Halloween time:

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Nightmare, I'm not too familiar with. But I recall reading a review about it, like three years ago, and was very curious about it. Just saw it announced to be released through IFC, so interest came back.

Also, no covers for these yet, but also coming up:

The William Castle Film Collection (Due October 20th):

"The Complete Lonewolf & Cub Boxset including Shogun Assassin" from Eureka

I've only seen "Lightning Swords of Death" (aka. "Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades") and that was a very entertaining and stylish piece of action. And bloody.

Sept 15 this is coming out for you Johnnie To, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark fans (all three direct) on R1 Magnolia. I don't like the high price of 26 retail, but I'll probably end up getting it.

This is coming out Sept. 13th. I picked it up when it was a Best Buy exclusive (and check out my review of this on Amazon).

Not "forthcoming", but new, is this monumental release.

PATRICK BOKANOWSKI'S L'ANGE ON DVD!!!! From this British Animation Awards company I've never heard of.

I've seen L'Ange streamed online, and it's one of the best experimental features I've ever seen. Do yourself the pleasure of seeing this film.

Also, I didn't know where else to post this bit of wonderful information:
According to this article (last paragraph), Matsui Yoshihiko's Noisy Requiem may receive a DVD release with English subtitles at some point (I watched this on a poor VHS rip because I really didn't feel like paying 95 dollars for a release with no subtitles, as nice as the release looks, and it was incredible). This is phenomenal news.

And yes, no one pays attention to my weird, avant-garde film notifications, but when has that stopped me before? :P

Lies. Never stop posting. I'm actually considering that Bokanowski now, so thanks.

It's short notice, but here comes this. If you're not sure about Zulawski, there's also a stripped down version.

Haha. Exaggerations are fun. That was a sort of lame bit of humor, I do know there's a niche on here who share my passions. L'Ange is up on UBUWEB if you want to get a taste of it. I think you'd like it.

I've been interested in Andrzej Żuławski for a while now. Possession is out of print, and is getting up there in prices, a bit too much of a blind buy to spend that sum of money on for me. I might start with On the Silver Globe or That Most Important Thing: Love. Have you seen much Żuławski? Or any?

On The Silver Globe is one of the most psychotic/beautiful/haunting/enigmatic/wonderful/strange/confusing/and just-plain-weird film experiences I've ever had and I LOVED every second of it.

The Third Part of The Night and Possession (<-- luckily I found this OOP beauty for only $10 when it was priced around $70 on the Amazon Marketplace) are also great but highly disturbing and, again, confusing as hell. His dialogue is so hard to follow as it's very abstract and enigmatic so it makes for tough but wonderful film-going experiences. The subject matter and the themes explored in his films along with the overall mood are highly fascinating but not for everyone. I'm really not sure how to describe his style. It's just so unique and bizarre.

Bottom line, I love Zulawski and Lohengrin, I have a feeling you might be able to enjoy his films as well.

Next on my list is Diabel (The Devil).

Also, I love Mondo Vision (website here) for putting out these otherwise impossible-to-find Zulawski DVDs in fantastic packages. They have his entire catalog of films and are currently working on putting them out one-by-one.

Another little tidbit:

I had e-mailed them on a possible time frame for an On The Silver Globe release and this is what I got:

Dear Dan,

Thank you for your email. We are currently finishing up the work on L'Amour Braque which will be out in October. Zulawski's early Polish Films, Silver Globe included are in very bad shape as far as negatives are concerned, we are working endlessly to restore them in order to put out the definite editions once and for all. We have no set release date for Silver Globe but it will most likely come out later than the other releases.

Best,

Mazi

Seconded. At least somewhere in my top twenty or so of "most psychotic/beautiful/haunting/enigmatic/wonderful/strange/confusing/and just-plain-weird film experiences." lol

You lucky rat bastard. I've seen it, but don't have my own copy. Adjani's character makes Deneuve's in Repulsion look like a well-balanced young lady to take home to your parents. Her performance was just aces. I keep coming very close to saying hellwithit and shelling out the typical merchant's asking price.

Third Part is super. Especially grating is the scene associated with SecondRun's cover. Ugh. (shudder)

Amen. You (Lohengrin) said recently you've looked at getting into Rybczynski. As much as I love him if it ever comes down to between the two artists, I'd suggest you crack into Zulawski first.

In my opinion (at least their deluxe editions, I don't have experience with the more stripped-down versions) are fairly comparable to Criterions as far as presentation goes. Do you have the other two? Are you getting the new one?
I personally would describe Zulawski as somewhere between grindhouse and arthouse, surrealism and blood, disjointed plotlines and dialogue that somehow still make perfect sense, blended in such a way as to induce delightful nausea. But even that isn't apt, because it seems (to varying extents) many of his films are completely different creatures from the others. Hell, sometimes a singular part of a film is a different creature from the rest of the film. lol

Dan, thanks for sharing the news, plus I wasn't aware Mondo owned his whole catalog. My copy of Silver Globe is a treasure, but admittedly not great quality.
Do you know if they have plans on expanding out to other directors? Because their site has had for a while a "Directors" section that has only had one - Zulawski - in it.

Thanks for all the information. I see I've opened a huge discussion. Very good to hear. I've just gone the chronological route (at least chronologically with the ones that interest me most) and ordered The Third Part of the Night. I'll try to post my thoughts here. I've wanted it for a while, but you guys gave me a good push. Thanks. Andrzej Żuławski definitely seems like my kind of filmmaker.

After that, That Most Important Thing: Love, Possession, and On the Silver Globe perhaps? Depends when that Mondo Video distributor gets the latter two out. Gah I'm going to have trouble waiting.

So yeah, just ranting here, but thanks. It's just too bad that for someone studying the Polish language like myself, all the great Polish filmmakers seem to make their movies in French or in France! Żuławski, Kieślowski, etc...

Mondo has announced that Zulawski's Szamanka will be "Coming Soon!". That's good news and all but I'd prefer Possession, Third Part of The Night, The Devil or On The Silver Globe.

Also, Pathfinder Home Entertainment (egh...) will be releasing Lee Chang-dong's first feature, Green Fish in November. I'm pretty excited but I'm not too keen on Pathfinder.

Not sure anyone knows about this, but John Huston's The Dead has received a hack job from Lionsgate. Apparently, anything from 8 minutes to 18 minutes in the running time is missing.

African Queen finally available for pre-order.

EDIT: Nevermind on this. They took off the price on both searching and the listing (damn them for notifying me).

If this happens great, but there's no information regarding a release date yet. Paramount stopped sending me review copies so I'm upset with them anyway.

I'm skeptical that Amazon listing means anything. I've seen them offer preorders for stuff that's not officially in the works. They do this with TV shows all the time. For example they already had preorders for True Blood season two before the season even started airing on tv! I've also seen many blu ray releases listed on Amazon that most certainly have not been officially announced and have been on the site for some time.

I do hope the African Queen comes out soon though. One of my favorite films.
