I saw Silent Light at the Wisconsin Film Festival this year and it's a masterpiece. It firmly sets Carlos Reygadas among the finest working filmmakers today. I hesitate to compare it to other known works for fear it will give certain things away. But in any case run, don't walk. It's fabulous.

I liked it a lot though there is some scenes that should have been removed... (like the scene were the kids are washed...) The movie is a little bit too long...

P.s. its already in R1 in canada (quebec?) since at least 6 months...

Yeah I can see how some could say that. I see Reygadas' style as integral to the story. The film depicts a Mennonite community, and is meant to be very meditative and to take the audience out of itself a bit, almost calling attention to the unnatural pace of the world we live in and the art form he's working in. There were moments watching it where I felt it needed to hurry up, but I have to remind myself that's more likely to be a flaw of my own than of the film's.

Paramount has announced 3 new Legacy Collection titles for October. The African Queen, Chinatown and Sorry, Wrong Number. Both The African Queen and Chinatown are great films that I can't wait to revisit. The extras on these sets range from poor to stellar and are decidedly mixed bags overall. The best thing about the Legacy Collection is the transfers which have all been near flawless to date.

Sorry, Wrong Number I've never even heard of. It stars Barbara Stanwyck which is a big plus in my book, looking forward to checking it out for the first time!

^ Those haven't been officially announced yet, but if they happen only The African Queen would be welcomed by me. Chinatown just had a cheap Collector's Edition (great transfer) less than two years ago and should really be released simultaneously on Blu-ray if a better edition surfaces. Sorry, Wrong Number is little more than a filmed radio play where the suspense aspect doesn't fully translate into the language of cinema. Stanwyck is good, but her performance alone can't make up for the other flaws.

In other news, Husbands now has full details available, including cover art and extras, at DVD Times. Sony is so laughably bad with cover art that I'm especially impressed to see a nice-looking sleeve from them.

I am certainly excited to see more Shaw attention in R1, and I will be doing my part and voting with my wallet, but I am slightly irritated that I don't really need this. :D The IVL transfer doesn't have a thing wrong with it, which is the case with just about all IVL Shaw DVDs. It might justify upgrading if the subs are improved, but that is another area IVL is typically fine in (though how the hell would I know...). :D

Noticed DVDAF has the titles listed:

- It Happened in Hollywood (1937)
- Adventure in Sahara (1938)
- Power of the Press (1943)
- Shockproof (1949)
- Scandal Sheet (1952)
- Crimson Kimono, The (1959)
- Underworld U.S.A. (1961)

What the hell? Out of seven films, only two are directed by Fuller? I understand Sam was just as much a writer as a director, but this seems very lopsided. What about Park Row, China Gate, Run of the Arrow, or Thieves After Dark? It is hard to see these other five writing credits of his as an accurate representation of his work. The very reason he started directing films in the first place (according to him) was that other studios and directors would butcher his work as a screenwriter/novelist. Sure, I'm tickled about the two that made it, especially Crimson Kimono, but I'm a bit disappointed at how this was handled. :(

The cover according to DVDAF:

This is nice to see, but seeing as how Sony released the Spanish DVD I already have I would expect the transfers are the same. I don't recall there being anything wrong with it. All in all, I love more Cassavetes in the US, please bring on Love Streams. :)

- Zombies on Broadway (1945)

I heard about this awhile back. Looking forward to this a lot of course :D. Zombies on Broadway sounds like quite a great title :D. Now only if they put out a great version of White Zombie or Island of Lost Souls.

I honestly feel I no longer have the will power to wait until September for a U.S. DVD release of Silent Light. Do you think it would be wise to go with this one instead? Or should I just wait.

This is kind of like how I feel about the upcoming release of Johnnie To/Ringo Lam/Tsui Hark's Tri-angle (which is coming out Sept 15). But honestly with so many good films I find it is easy to pretty much wait for anything. So just get whichever is the best copy

Well maybe except for Ong Bak 2 and Early Edition Season 2 which is coming out next Tuesday.

Nice catch, my friend. That's one of just a few of his I haven't seen.

Who the hell is Microcinema? If I have anything of theirs, I don't realize it. $30 for a single-disc? Hmm.

Just in time for Halloween, naturally. Is anyone else looking forward to finally seeing this in Widescreen? This is one of those select few mainstream horror films from my childhood that still manages to creep me out, Something Wicked This Way Comes being another with its almost Bava-esque atmosphere.
